Hope’s Wings Domestic Violence Program

Hope’s Wings has been serving Madison County and other surrounding counties since 2006. Our growing list of services not only supports victims of domestic violence, but also educates the community so we can all come together in an effort to end domestic violence.

Domestic violence can happen to anyone and affects families in a variety of ways. Statistics show domestic violence affects one in four individuals.

Hope’s Wings provides numerous domestic violence services to protect victims and help them regain control over their lives through our three-phase program designed to address immediate crisis, self-sustainability through education and employment training, and establishing safe, affordable, and permanent housing free from violence.

Why we do what we do

1 in 4 women will experience intimate partner violence in her lifetime
1 in 9 men will experience intimate partner violence in his lifetime
70% of our nation’s children grow up in homes where intimate partner violence occurs.
Children who grow up in violent homes are more likely to drop out of school, develop behavioral problems, struggle with mental health, use drugs, or become victims/perpetrators themselves.
On a typical day, there are more than 20,000 phone calls placed to domestic violence hotlines nationwide.
The presence of a gun in a domestic violence situation increases the risk of homicide by 500%.

Crisis Line

The Hope’s Wings 24-hour crisis line is the gateway to our domestic violence services. The first priority of our staff is to ensure callers in immediate danger are provided with crisis intervention and strategies to find safety. Staff can provide comprehensive information about our shelter services, resources, referrals, and safety planning. This information helps callers become more knowledgeable about the dynamics of domestic violence and to learn about resources available to them.

*Our Crisis Line staff can assist those who are Spanish-speaking as well.

Note: Our help line can be called with both an ordinary telephone or a teletype device (TTY), so it is accessible to people with speech and hearing disabilities.

Community Outreach

Hope’s Wings outreach programs are designed to ensure victims’ safety, assist them in breaking the cycle of violence, and support them as they begin rebuilding their lives free from violence and fear.

Legal Advocacy

As survivors of domestic violence weave their way through the judicial system, we are able to provide vital information and support along the way. Whether filing for a protection order or dealing with custody issues, Hope’s Wings assists program participants and helps navigate an often confusing and daunting legal system. We will connect victims with local legal clinics and accompany them to court proceedings.

Safety Planning

Our goal for working with domestic violence survivors is to increase their ability to stay safe in the present and the future and heal from the effects of violence. A Hope’s Wings advocate is available 24/7 to support you. Together we can create a safety plan to meet your specific need.

Client Advocacy

Victims of domestic violence do not have to reside in the Hope’s Wings shelter to receive advocacy services. Advocates are available to victims regardless of where they live. They provide counseling and education, and are available to provide support throughout the process of filing protection orders, receiving medical care, etc… It is Hope’s Wings goal to assist victims of domestic violence navigate systems that can often be intimidating or overwhelming for them. We strive to inform victims of their rights and resources, while providing support, in order to empower them to make informed choices.

Support Groups

Hope’s Wings facilitates a support group for victims of domestic violence. Our support groups provide a safe and confidential opportunity for victims/survivors to come together, share their experiences and learn from each other. It is also a place to build friendships, support, and experience healing. Weekly support groups are facilitated by experienced domestic violence advocates.

Child Advocacy

Children and teens who experience domestic violence in their families are themselves victims of domestic violence. Hope’s Wings provides age-appropriate information about domestic violence while also offering self-esteem building activities and skills to resolve conflict to end the learned behavior of domestic violence and build healthy relationships. Prevention is key to breaking the cycle of violence and Hope’s Wings believes that increased outreach to youth and teens will reduce domestic violence statistics long-term.

Community Education and Training

Educating the community about domestic violence is a key component of Hope’s Wings mission. Through our education and training programs, we hope to build a society that understands the impact of domestic violence on adults, children and the community and how we can break the cycle of domestic violence. Awareness Events

Hope’s Wings recognizes that it cannot win the battle against domestic violence alone. Awareness events are key to informing our community about the effects domestic violence has on individuals, families, and communities as a whole. We host various awareness events throughout the year.

Emergency Shelter

Hope’s Wings offers shelter to individuals fleeing an abuser. All residents staying in our shelter are given opportunities to increase their self-sustainability, skills, education, and self-esteem by attending weekly workshops, support and education groups, various life skills groups, financial literacy, etc..

Community Based/Transitional Housing

When funding permits, Hope’s Wings may provide rental assistance, housing advocacy and referrals for program participants who have moved beyond crisis and are making the transition to independent living.
